The Environmental Sciences Program, administered by the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, provides rigorous interdisciplinary training in the scientific study of the environment. It promotes an understanding of the Earth as a complex network of interacting organic and inorganic systems. The Environmental Sciences Program offers a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, and a minor in Environmental Sciences. These degree programs reflect the diversity in the broad field of environmental sciences and take advantage of the disciplinary strengths in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to offer students an opportunity to develop particular areas of expertise. Hands-on field experience is a crucial component of the B.S., B.A., and minor programs. Students are strongly encouraged to engage in research and study abroad.

Career possibilities for students in this major include jobs in conservation, environmental assessment, and hazardous waste management. They may also work as an inspection and compliance officer with the National Park Service, in a state park, or in a pollution control agency. The major also is excellent preparation for graduate study.
